Logs for Single Door Log Burners
An 8-inch log is the standard size for log burners because it fits comfortably inside small-to-medium stoves and burns with maximum efficiency.
Why Size Matters
- Clearance: Most UK stoves are small 4kW or 5kW models. Larger logs will touch the internal bricks and crack them.
- Air circulation: Stoves need a 1-to-2-inch gap around the wood. This space allows oxygen to circulate and feed the flames.
-
Consistent burn: Small logs catch fire quickly. They create an even, controllable heat output.
Risks of Using Larger Logs
- Smoldering: Overly large logs block airflow. They burn cold, create dirty smoke, and blacken the glass door.
- Creosote buildup: Cold, smoky fires deposit tar in your chimney. This soot buildup dramatically increases the risk of chimney fires.
- Damaged glass: If a log rolls forward against the glass panel, the intense localised heat can shatter it.
